4 Tips For Remaining Calm During The Holidays

The holidays can be stressful for many reasons, and a toxic family dynamic could be one of them. Licensed counselor Jeff Guenther has four tips to help you remain calm during stressful holiday gatherings.

  1. "Limit those feelings of obligation. Remind yourself that it's completely okay not to want closeness with certain family members even if they are your biological relatives. Being related doesn't obligate you.
  2. "Give yourself permission to change and grow. You're abandoning their toxic system. It's easier for them to blame you rather than face their own accountability for the hurt they've caused. Remember, it is not your fault for striving to be a better person."
  3. "Honor your stated boundaries and hold them firmly. Excuse yourself if a boundary is crossed."
  4. "Focus on the physical. Reset your sympathetic nervous system by taking a breather in the bathroom and turning on the faucet. Let your hands glide under the cold water to lower your body temperature."
